3) WEIGH UP = (phrasal verb) : "I'm weighing up whether to study

what should I do?" (non so decidere)

10 espressioni inglesi "da Zoo"!
Oggi ci divertiamo con una serie di espressioni inglesi
che hanno come soggetto gli animali.
Vediamole insieme!
1. "Make a pig's ear of something"
Gestire qualcosa in modo maldrestro, fuoriluogo.
- "Sharon made a right pig's ear of that presentation".
2. "Have Kitten"
Essere estremamente nervosi o infastiditi.
- "We are so late! My mum will be having kitten"
3. "All dress up like dog's dinner"
Vestirsi in modo troppo elegante per l'occasione, o con vestiti troppo vistosi
- "Look at him, dressed up like a dog's dinner. Honestly".
4. "A cold fish"
Una persona che si comporta in modo freddo, con poca emozione
- "I've tried talking to Rachel at the party, but she's a bit of a cold fish"
5. "Like a bear with a sore head" (sore head = permaloso)
Una persona molto irritabile
- "I don't know what's up with Mike. He's like a bear with a sore head".
6. "Not give a monkey's"
Essere completamente indifferenti o per nulla preoccupati.

7. "Like a rat up a drainpipe" (drainpipe = tubo di scarico)
Molto veloce o con impazienza

8. "Be up the lark" (lark = allodola)
Alzarsi dal letto molto presto la mattina
- "On Christmas Day my sister and I would always be up with lark".
9. "The lion's share"
La parte più grande di qualcosa

10. "Stag might or party and hen night or party" (stag = cervo maschio/ Hen = gallina)
Una festa tenuta per un uomo, o donna, che deve sposarsi, organizzato
dagli amici, o amiche.

- "Ben's out on a stag do. We've no idea when he'll come home".

Verbi con preposizioni
In inglese è frequente l'uso dei verbi seguiti da preposizioni che, insieme, formano un tutt'uno per quanto riguarda il significato.
Uno stesso verbo può avere diversi significati, anche molto diversi tra loro, a seconda della preposizione che lo accompagna.
Ecco alcuni di essi.
Be in = Be at home (essere a casa)
Be out = Be away from home (essere fuori casa)
Be back = Have returned after an absence (essere di ritorno)
Be over = Be finished ( essere finito)
Bring up = Educate, train children (allevare)
Carry on = Continue (continuare portare avanti un lavoro)
Be fed up with = Be completely tired of...(essere proprio stufi)
Get back = Return home; Recover possession of...( ritornare a casa o riavere qualcosa)
Get on = Make progression (andare avanti; progredire)
Get through = Be connected on the phone (avere la comunicazione telefonica)
Get up = Rise from the bed (alzarsi da letto)
Give back = Restore a thing to its owner ( restituire)
Give in = Yield (Cedere)
Give up = Abandon an attempt (abbandonare- smettere)
Hold on = Wait on the phone (aspettare in linea)
Look after = Take care of...( prendersi cura di...)
Look forward to+ gerundio = Expect with joy (attendere con ansia-non vedere l'ora)
Make out = Discorver, understand (scoprire il significato)
Make up one's mind = Come to a decision (prendere una decisione)
Make up = Use cosmetic (truccarsi)
Pay back = Repay (ripagare)
Point out = Show (mostrare, indicare)
Put on = Dress oneself ( indossare)
Ring up = Telephone (telefonare)
Run after = Pursue (inseguire)
See someone off = Accompany someone to the train, the plane... (accompagnare qualcuno al treno)
Send for = Summon (mandare a chiamare qualcuno)
Stand for = Represent (rappresentare)
Think over/ Think about = Consider the consequences ( pensarci su/ pensare alle conseguenze)
Turn into = Convert into (cambiare, mutare)
Turn off = Switch off (spegnere)
Turn over = Turn upside down (rovesciare, girare)
Wash up = Wash the plates (lavare i piatti)
Wear out = Use till no longer serviceable (consumare vestiti, scarpre...)
Watch up= Look out (fare attenzione)
